When the chemical indicator sheet in the centre of the pack is exposed to a specific combination of temperature and steam for a specific period of time, it undergoes a clear colour change from yellow to dark blue/violet. If no air or other non-condensible gases are present in the chamber, the steam penetrates the test pack rapidly and completely, with the result that the indicator sheet changes colour evenly. In contrast, if air or non-condensible gases are present, they will accumulate in the centre of the pack as an air/gas pocket and provoke an uneven colour change in the indicator. Clear yellow or brown discolouration will be visible on the indicator. Test parameters: 134°C to 137°C for a holding time of 3.5 minutes max.
