Modern vestibular diagnostics require a high degree of precision when looking for spontaneous or provoked nystagmus. In many cases, the only way of making a correct diagnosis was to perform a technically complex electronystagmography (ENG). The new nystagmus glasses by De. Blessing represent a user-friendly alternative. With these new goggles, nystagmus intensity and amplitude achieve 80% - 99% of ENG values. Dr. Blessing’s new Nystagmus Goggles are illuminated indirectly so as to not trigger light reflexes that could have the undesired, nystagmus-inhibiting effect of visual fixation in the patient. As shielding of the light bulbs means that light does not fall directly onto the patient’s eyes, no PURKINJE vein image occurs, the movement of which could trigger arbitrary “illuminated goggles nystagmus”. As such, we avoid false positive nystagmus results. The actual examination using these goggles takes place in a dark or a heavily dimmed room. The illumination of the inside of the goggles causes the patient to lose visual contact with his/her surroundings (preventing nystagmus-inhibiting visual fixation). At the same time, it is especially easy to observe the patient’s brightly illuminated eyes using magnifying lenses. This means it is often possible to detect immediately, just by looking at the patient, pathological nystagmus processes that would be impossible or difficult to detect, even when looking sideways.
With the lenses turned up and the room illumination switched on, eye observation with maintained fixation is possible: e.g. the Hallpike-technique of termal examination. After switching off room illumination and hinging down the lenses, an immediate change-over into the actual luminous spectacle examination with elimination of fixation may be started.
- the Nystagmus Spectacle may only be operated with 4 Volt maximally
- with head strap and power supply cord
