Cutimed® Epiona is an absorbable wound dressing consisting of 90% collagen and 10% calcium alginate, which activates and promotes the healing process of chronic and stagnant wounds (problem wounds) ("kick-start"). Cutimed® Epiona consists of 90 % native bovine collagen, i.e. it has a similar structural composition to the human dermis. The collagen fibers are arranged in a 3D matrix structure. Native collagen can therefore temporarily take over the natural functions of the collagen that is defective in the chronic wound, such as promoting cell growth and acting as a scaffold for fibroblast migration. In addition, Cutimed® Epiona binds factors that have a negative effect on wound healing (e.g. MMPs), thereby protecting growth factors and preventing the body's own collagen from being disrupted in its formation. In this way, Cutimed® Epiona activates and promotes the healing process of chronic or stagnant wounds. In addition, Cutimed® Epiona contains 10 % calcium alginate, which transforms the dressing into a flexible moist gel when exudate is absorbed. This creates an ideally moist wound environment and optimized healing conditions. The dressing is absorbed into the wound. Any residue can be rinsed out with a wound irrigation solution.
